The best homemade dog food recipe ever,
at least that’s what Finley thinks.

Hi, I’m Finley! I’m a 3 year old Beagle rescued from a barn by my two Dads.

WHY I THINK IT’S GREAT
Created with love and care by my Dads.
Fresh ingredients seemed to have fixed my tummy issues I had with dry kibble.
- Tons of protein
- Antioxidants
- Herb Superfoods
- Calcium
WHY MY DADS LIKE IT
We can cook a month’s worth of food and freeze it.
There were four important requirements for us to go from bagged kibble to fresh, homemade food.
- Freezable – We didn’t want to give up our lives to cooking dog food! We created a recipe where we can cook a month’s worth of food and freeze it in one week batches. Click here to learn more about freezer safe containers safe for food!
- Affordable – Fresh, prepared foods available at local grocery stores or online are expensive. Like REALLY expensive! Putting in an hour every few weeks to save hundreds of dollars is worth it! If $18.00 a week sounds good to you, keep reading!
- Easy to Make – If you can brown meat, work a rice cooker, and combine a few ingredients, you got this! It took some practice, but now we knock this out in about an hour.
- Healthy – Easy to digest, full of protein, calcium, and antioxidants. No mystery ingredients or chemicals. We add in vitamins and supplements and it still costs less than prepackaged fresh food.
- Beautiful Bowels – Yes, you read that right. This almost immediately corrected the bowel issues Finley had when we got him. No more soft stool, no more stinky toots.

The Recipe
7 lbs Ground Turkey
3 cups Brown Rice, uncooked
3 cans (15 oz) pure Sweet Potato or Pumpkin Puree`
2 cups Steel Cut Oats
8 Large Eggs and their shells (filled with calcium and nutrients)
48 oz Peas & Carrots (cooked or thawed (I buy frozen))
2 cups Fresh or Frozen Blueberries (thawed)
17 oz Chicken Bone Broth
3 tbsp Fresh or Dried Rosemary
3 tbsp Fresh or Dried Thyme
3 tbsp Fresh or Dried Sage
2 tbsp Salt (optional)
Start cooking the brown rice in the rice cooker. I cook the rice with water and half of the bone broth. As the rice is cooking, brown the ground turkey in a large stock pot. About halfway through add the rest of the bone broth, the steel cut oats and the fresh or dried herbs to the ground turkey. Mix in the eggs and set the shells aside. Meanwhile cook the peas & carrots as per the directions on the package. Use an immersion blender (we like the Vitamix brand) to puree the peas, carrots, eggshells, and blueberries. Once all ingredients have cooked, add the brown rice, fruit and vegetable mix, and sweet potato/pumpkin puree to the stock pot and fold together. Divide into containers that will allow a 1 week supply. Refrigerate or freeze immediately. Remember, this is fresh food, so it is not recommended to keep fresh food for longer than 1 week without freezing.
Finley is a 3 year old 35 pound active Beagle. He receives a 1/2 cup of food 2 times per day (once in the morning and once in the evening). Consult your Veterinarian to determine what is right for your dog.
The best thing about this recipe is that it’s completely customizable! We get questions all the time about adding things like organ meat, bone broth, or even additional seasonings like salt or oregano. Our answer is always, check with your veterinarian or canine nutritionist. Also follow your dogs tummy! Even if it’s vet/nutritionist approved, your dogs tummy might not love it. So just be aware and adjust your customizations as needed.
Vitamins & Supplements
Regardless if you’re serving your dog dry kibble, store-bought fresh food, or homemade food, it’s important to ensure your best friend is getting the vitamins needed for a healthy lifestyle!
